News Analysed, Opinions Expressed

Politics | Assembly 12

Both groups claim 22 to 24 seats

Both ruling and opposition parties have claimed that the historic turnout would go in their favour, with their alliances getting between 20 to 24 seats.

Almost all the party leaders have however admitted that two to four independents could get elected.

Chief minister Digambar Kamat says the Congress-NCP alliance would win seats between 22 to 24 while the BJP-MGP alliance would not be able to cross 13, leaving two seats to independents.

BJP president Laxmikant Parsekar predicts opposite, with 22 to 28 seats for the BJP-MGP alliance while 10 to 13 seats for the Congress-NCP alliance, leaving two to three seats for the independents.

Dipak Dhawalikar, his alliance partner and MGP chief, predicts that their alliance would win 23 to 24 seats, while the Congress-NCP could win only 11 to 13.

Congress spokesman Mauvin Godinho puts forwards little different analysis, stating that the large turnout would damage Congress but the BJP would not benefit from it.

According to him, Congress-NCP would get between 17 to 19 while BJP-MGP would get not more than 12 to 13. The rest would go to independents, which are almost over 10.

NCP chief Suresh Sirsat however feels that his party would win five out of seven seats, with Congress getting almost 21. The BJP-MGP would not get more than 10 to 12 seats, he feels.

Prabhakar Timble, a political analyst, however gives equal weightage to both, putting Congress-NCP between 18 to 19 and BJP-MGP between 16 to 17.
