News Analysed, Opinions Expressed

Historic turnout of 82%, Youth break record of Opinion Poll

Goa created a record electoral history by recording 82 per cent turnout for the Assembly poll this time, almost 10 per cent more than in 2007.

Almost close to this was 81.70 per cent voting registered during the historic Opinion Poll on 13 January 1967. This poll had foiled the plan to merge Goa into Maharashtra.

North Goa voter this time was proved more vigorous as 84 per cent people came out to exercise their franchise.

In comparison, South Goa recorded 79 per cent.

The highest percentage of voting – 88.51% - was recorded in Sanquelim constituency in Bicholim taluka.

Velim in Salcete taluka recorded the lowest – 73.49%.

Reports gathered from all over Goa indicated that large number of youth, including students voting for the first time, played a major role in increasing the polling turnout.

Political analysts feel that social networking sites like Facebook or Twitter have played a major role in spreading the message, besides Election Commission projecting youth icon Remo Fernandes as the ambassador to vote.

I hope most voters have voted objectively based on past performance, character, corruptibility, nothing-but-my-family attitude, etc. and not on the base of 'amgelo', 'amchya jaticho', 'amgelo kiristav/kokno' or such emotional basis. It is horrible to see the muslim community in goa putting up their vote for auction!!
