Goa creates history by crossing 50% polling by 1 pm

Goa is today witnessing historic voters’ turnout, crossing 50 per cent by 1 pm, which has never happened in the electoral history of Goa.

In many parts, including cities, it has even crossed 70 per cent.

Badsare and Marlim in Canacona recorded over 80 per cent in the first half.

However, reports indicate that people in these areas are going to a hillock in the evening to celebrate their traditional Shigmo.

Goa, in 2007, had recorded average72 per cent voting.

In 2002, it was 69 per cent.

Both the elections had elected hung Assemblies.

However, the trend today appeared to be in favour of a change.

The most significant aspect is that educated youth has come out in a large number to vote, whether in the cities or even the remote villages.

The youth consists of 23 per cent in Goa today, between the age group 18 to 30.

Similarly, large numbers of women were seen at the polling booths.

The traditional pattern of voting is to record around 20 per cent by 10 am and around 40 per cent by 1 pm.

However, the polling today crossed 30 per cent in the first two hours, from 7 am to 9 am.

Polling this time has started at 7 am, unlike 8 am in the past.

It crossed 40 per cent by 11 am and recorded average 50 per cent by 1 pm.

If a similar trend continues, Goa may record a historic turnout of crossing 80 per cent by 5 pm.

Good to see the trend for voting improving..The next step will be to eliminate the winning the elections by purchase of votes and vote bank politics....The use of money and muscle power may decrease if a strong effective " Janlokpal" gets installed--preventing the Politicians from using their offices to collect wealth.....
