Complete Guide on Old Goa released
20 November 2004 23:33 ISTOld Goa: The Complete Guide, published as a joint venture of Plus Publications and Third Millennium Publishers of Panjim, was released at the hands of Fr Romualdo de Souza, Director, Goa Institute of Management Studies, Ribandar, at a simple ceremony held recently.
Speaking on the occasion, Fr De Souza said that the Guide is sure to be of service to the pilgrim and tourist alike as the churches of Old Goa and St Francis Xavier are contextualized in the larger reality that was the world city of Goa in the sixteenth century. He said the Guide also brings to light several causes of the fall, including the environmental factor, thus acting as an eye-opener for modern urban planners.
The text of this handy volume, written by Mr Oscar de Noronha, comprises an elucidative essay on the former metropolis as well as a guided tour of the city, with copious notes on its surviving landmarks.
This is followed by a biographical sketch of St Francis Xavier, with an insight into his life and times, the history of the Expositions down the centuries, besides several interesting titbits about the Goencho Saib, according to Mr Ilidio de Noronha who conceptualised the Guide.
The Guide has a rich collection of photographs and illustrations. Adding value to the tome is its ‘bonus section’ on Panjim, a brief list of 'must see' venues of spiritual, historical and cultural interest in the State and a comprehensive directory on products and services available.
Each of the three sections ends with reminiscences by Goans from the world over and relevant quotations from research works on the themes covered.
The Guide, priced at Rs 125, is available at all leading bookshops.
