Goa Dairy sabotaging milk production, will take it over: CM

Goa Government today said it can take over the Goa Milk Cooperative Union, commonly known as Goa Dairy, if there is a strong opposition against setting up of the new milk union in the state.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar informed the Assembly that the state government has already submitted a proposal with the Centre to set up another milk cooperative milk union.
"But if there is an opposition for alternate union, the state government can take over the existing Goa Dairy", he said.
The issue was raised in the House by BJP legislator Vishnu Surya Wagh who questioned the proposal and said it may spell death for the existing one and that the state government should work on improving the existing dairy.
However, Parrikar said that Goa Dairy has failed to meet the milk demand of the city.
"Goa Dairy is sabotaging the plans to increase the milk production in the state. They are not able to fulfill demand of the market. Milk production in state is 75,000 litres a day, while the requirement is 3.5 lakh litres a day," Parrikar said.
The chief minister also said that the state government subsidises milk to the tune of Rs 9.40 per litre, but despite this the dairy has been increasing the prices, without taking state government into confidence.
Despite assurance from directors of the Goa Dairy to the government, they hiked price, he said.
Leader of opposition Pratap Singh Rane said the state government cannot start parallel milk union as there is contract with Goa Dairy that stops state from having another milk cooperative union.
Parrikar, on the contract point, said the government will study the contract and work out a solution.
