Overconfident Cong didn't realise pulse of the masses: Subhash
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 12 March 2012 21:31 ISTPramod Acharya interviewing Subhash Shirodkar
No solution on issues like Regional Plan, Medium of Instruction, prominence given to Family Raj, ticket allocation made under pressure and non-realisation of pulse of the masses are identified as major factor for the debacle of Congress.
Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Subhash Shirodkar, in a Head On programme, told Prudent that overconfidence was also one the major factor that took the voter for granted.
“Even I was overconfident”, said the defeated candidate of Shiroda.
He has been defeated for the second consecutive time in Shiroda by his one-time personally assistant and BJP MLA Mahadev Naik.
He frankly admitted that Family Raj became a negative factor.
“Tickets were allotted under pressure. Even I did not put my foot down where it was required”, said the GPCC chief.
According to him, the most unexpected among all was the miserable defeat of the Congress in Salcete taluka.
Except former chief minister Digambar Kamat in Margao and Alex Reginald Lourenco, not a single Congress candidate in other six constituencies got elected in Salcete taluka.
It included heavyweights like Churchill Alemao, his brother Joaquim, Aleixo Sequeira and Filipe Neri Rodrigues.
Shirodkar however dismissed any possibility of trying to topple the BJP-led coalition government in next six months.
“We should allow them to perform after ruling Goa for three decades”, he felt.
The BJP has gained absolute majority of 21 seats in the 40-member House but has formed a coalition government with three MGP and two independents, honoring the pre-election alliance.
The GPCC president has also made it clear that he is prepared to step down from the post if the central leadership feels so.
Though youth has played a major role in defeating the Congress, Shirodkar welcomed the trend of youth reacting in such a manner.
Corruption , nepotism, cuts and commissions, family raj, loot of natural resources by a few , over dependence on the High Command for every silly thing, allowing huge flow of revenue from the State to Center, Extravagant life style by the Politicians, Arrogance, and indifference to masses, neglect of infrastructure developments, and taking for granted the votes of educated Catholics...---all this brought the downfall of the Party....A good lesson to learn.....
No Idea if its over confidence or no confidence, but you guys dont deserve to even contest the elections. Shameless that you'll can be - looted the state of Goa and now youll contemplate what went wrong. Poor people have no means to even get one meal properly a day in Goa whils't you guys have looted crores and crores from the state.
I was a congress supporter but looking at the way the state has been managed for the last term it's a shame for me.
You guys called the BJP communal but you'll couldnt even shift the IFFI to another date when it coincided with the feast of St. Francis Xavier
Atleast one good consolation that Mr. Alemao did not ask for 40 tickets for his family members, Aunties, Uncles, Cousins, Nephews , Nieces ........ !!!
It is not overconfidence. The Kangress took voters particularly Christians for granted. They thought, no matter what, Christians will always stick by us (so the Sashti shock!). Wake up Kangress you got a reality check in time.
Besides, Kangress also institutionalized corruption in Goa. Not that there is any society completely free from corruption, but, thanks to Kangress, it percolated to every level of society and governance in Goa.
