People are opposing BJP’s arrogance, not DefExpo: AAP

Nilesh Cabral pushing AAP activists

The undemocratic and arrogant behaviour of the ruling politicians of the Bharatiya Janata Party was visible more than enough when its MLAs misbehaved with the leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party, who had gone to the Defence Expo site during the Chief Minister’s visit yesterday.

In spite of making a prestige issue of literally getting booed away by the BJP supporters, the AAP today said neither they nor the locals are actually opposed to DefExpo, but the arrogance of the ruling politicians.

Wearing AAP caps, handful of AAP activists, led by state secretary Valmiki Naik, had gone to attend the meeting Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar was having with the locals of Fatorpa in the temple adjacent to the DefExpo Quitol site.

“Instead of addressing genuine grievances of the people to sort out the issue, we were surprised that the CM remained a mute spectator to the intimidation and manhandling by BJP MLAs Subhash Phaldesai and Nilesh Cabral”, Valmiki Naik told a press conference today.

By refusing to take into confidence the affected villagers and ensuring that the event truly benefits the local area, the incompetent and arrogant BJP-led government is turning this issue into yet another potential international embarrassment, he felt.

The AAP has demanded that Parsekar apologises for this undemocratic behaviour as well his administrative failure in handing the issue in a democratic manner through a healthy dialogue.

People booing away AAP leaders

According to Dr Oscar Rebello, the government is simply assuming that protestors are opposing the DefExpo when actually they want to know what the event is all about.

“How can the villagers oppose or support an event they have no information about”, he asked.

This is the conclusion the AAP is arrived at, said Naik, after meeting all the stakeholders including the Orixtt Porjecho Avaz, Naqueri-Betul panchayat members and the Director of the DefExpo Organization M D Singh.

People are confused about the event, he said, because the RTI information is contradictory to what the ruling party is talking about.

“If this is a permanent venue of DefExpo, don’t the villagers have a right to know what the proposed use of the land is for the remaining 11 months of the year”, he asked.

AAP has also asked why Congress leaders Luizinho Faleiro and MLA Babu Kavalekar did not go to meet the CM when he came to visit the site.

Naik has also alleged that the CM has issued a veiled threat to the Congress MLA to take action against his illegalities if he dares to oppose the DefExpo.
