Probe ordered into Food Scam at BRICS, contractor’s payment stopped

Calling it a Food Scam, the Goa Human Rights Commission has ordered to immediately stop the payment of the food contractor who supplied unhygienic and stale food to 5000 policemen during BRICS summit.

Taking serious cognisance of the media reports, chairperson A D Salkar has also instructed Chief Secretary to probe the whole episode and submit a report within 10 days.

In response to the complaint filed by social activist Aires Rodrigues, the Commission has also asked the CS to fix the responsibility on the defaulting officials.

“Prime facie, it appears that there is a major food scam of Rs 51.60 lakh pertaining to very substandard and rotten meals that were served to the police personnel deployed at the just concluded 2016 BRICS summit held in Goa”, stated the order.

The issue had come to light with two policemen hospitalised due to food poisoning.

Police inspector Anushka Pai Bir told the Commission that food was supplied to 5000 police personnel from 14th to 17th October by M/s Amonkar Classic Caterers of Bicholim.

The Commission in the order observed that the contractor supplied the food packets through sub-contractor, who built a makeshift shed full of grass and thick bushes in an open space near a petrol pump at the Verna police station.

It also observed that roadside labourers were engaged in cooking and water for cooking was stored in open plastic barrels with dead insects and cockroaches found in it.

TV channels showed visuals in what dirty manner the food was cooked and packed for delivery.

The Commission also took serious note of the reports which stated that leftover dinner was served as lunch while stale lunch packets were served for dinner.
