Largely attended protest meeting to condole murder of anti-superstition activist Dr Narendra Dabholkar today demanded legislation in Goa against superstition while also demanding ban on fanatic organisations spreading terror in the name of religion.

The meeting, held at Sanskruti Bhavan in Panaji, was also addressed by Dr Dabholkar’s borther Dattaprasad.

“Narendra was of the view that India needs to sacrifice one life to show the countrymen and the rulers that the country is still living in unscientific world even 66 years after its independence. He was proved right by the religious fanatics”, said Dattaprasad Dabholkar.

The crowd gathered at Sanskruti Bhavan today evening comprised of cross section of the society than the activists of Andhshradha Nirmulan Samiti (Committee against Superstition), including professionals, writers, social activists, academicians and even politicians.

Hearing the news that Maharashtra government has decided to promulgate ordinance to enact anti-prostitution bill Dr Dabholkar was fighting for the last 18 years, speakers at the meeting demanded similar legilsation in Goa.

“Why only Goa and Maharashtra, the whole country needs this bill to pull out the countrymen from blind faith and black magic and take them on the path of scientific temper”, said Dr Nandkumar Kamat, a scientist and thinker.

The demand for Goa legislation was made by Adv Satish Sonak and Sandesh Prabhudesai.

Eminent writer Damodar Mauzo and human resource trainer Pravin Sabnis also demanded that Sanatan Sanstha, having its headquarters in Goa, should be driven out of the state, when several speakers reminded the gathering about their involvement in attempted bomb blast on the eve of Diwali in Goa.

Sanatan Sanstha and Hindu Janjagaran Samiti have not only opposed the bill but have been spreading venom against ANS and Dr Dabholkar throughout.

“The progressive forces need to unite and show that they are a vocal majority, not silent any more”, said Goa editor of Lokmat, Raju Nayak and rationalist activist Somu Rao.

Writer and politician Vishnu Wagh also appealed all the progressive minded people to introspect, saying this is not the time to cry, but fight.

The sponteneous bandhs in Pune and Satara after Dr Dabholkar’s murder proves beyond doubt that the majority is for developing scientific temper in the society and not in favour of handful of religious fanatics, observed Dr Rupesh Patkar, a close associate of Dr Dabholkar.

Datta Damodar Naik, president of Gomant Vidya Niketan, announced on the occasion that his institution has decided to organise Samajik Parishad every year, which was earlier orgnised by Samata Andolan.

Chandrakant Jadhav, a Dalit writer, opined that the religious fanatics have killed Dr Dabholkar because they have failed to counter his rationalist thoughts.

Dr Mukul Pai Raiturkar, while condemning Goa government for not condoling death of a rationalist, said Dr Dabholkar was working to uphold the principles of scientific temper enshrined in the Indian Constitution while killing him is an unconstitutional act.

He also described Dr Dabholkar’s opponents as people suffering with psycho disorder while Adv Amrut Kansar narrated some incidents which indicated that women in Sanatan Sanstha were even divorsing from family life to achieve their fanatic goals.

While social activist Ramesh Gawas felt that Dr Dabholkar was the last soldier of social movement India has lost, trade union leader Christopher Fonseca appealed to all the rational-minded people to rally behind all the rationalist movements in the country.

Niraj Naik, a journalist, alleged that Dr Dabholkar was killed by those who were running a multi-crore business in the name of superstition.

Prashanti Talpankar, another social activist, said it was sad that a brother fighting for social equality and women’s rights was killed on the day of Raksha Bandhan by the opponent of equality.

Amit Narkar from Pune, calling the killing a failure of progressive forces, offered apology that Maharashtra could not save a great leader like Dr Dabholkar, who was a guiding force to the whole country.

Several other eminent persons spoke on the occasion including renowed painter Dr Subodh Kerkar, writers Pundalik Naik, Arjun Parab and N Shivdas, RSD activist Sukdu Bhosle, Adv Jatin Naik, Prashant Naik, Yugank Naik, Sangeeta Naik, Smita Timble and others.

Mario, Your post indicates that you represent Catholic version of Sanatan.

Narendra Dabholkar fought against blind faiths including all the ‘miracles’, not any religion/ Dharma.

Your post reminds me of what Gandhi said in ‘My Experiments with Truth’, Chapter 10, page 24. “I heard of a well-known Hindu having been converted to Christianity……... I also heard that the new convert had already begun abusing the religion of his ancestors, their customs and their country. All these things created in me a dislike for Christianity.”

I know you do not represent majority Goan Catholics as much as Sanatan do not represent majority Goan Hindus.

Anti superstition and black magic bills need to be passed in Goa also and all the fanatic organisations should be banned.

Rationalist movement should move ahead in Goa.

A great man, Dr. Dabholkar has been assassinated on Raksha Bandhan day. His death should not go in vain.

There is no religion such as "Hindu" it is just a culture. The Ramayana and Maharbharat are just epics, fictitous in nature.Show me one single miracle pertaining to so called fake Hindu Religion.Dr.Narendra Dabholkar knows this all and became a true voice against fake religion and at the end people worshipping fake Gods could not digest the truth.
