Goa wins Mhadei battle, Karnataka’s diversion plea rejected

Goa has won the first battle of Mhadei. The tribunal has rejected Karnataka’s plea to divert 7.56 TMC water from Mhadei basin to Malprabha River.
The tribunal set up over Mhadei (Mahadayi) river water dispute pronounced the oral judgement of its interim order in this regard today afternoon.
A detailed interim judgement would follow.
Additional Solicitor General of India Atmaram Nadkarni informed goanews.com that the tribunal has upheld the contention of Goa that the Mhadei water cannot be diverted.
Karnataka has been vigorously trying to divert the Mhadei water (Mandovi) to Malprabha basin by constructing canals between both the rivers.
However, the tribunal, in the interim order passed today, rejected the southern state’s plea.
The efforts of Karnataka to employ a battery of lawyers led by India’s seniormost counsel Adv Fali Nariman along with 40 other could not bear fruits.
Goa’s side was argued by few Goan lawyers led by Goa’s former AG Atmaram Nadkarni, along with Dattaprasad Lawande, Pankaj Verenkar, Purna Bhandari, Santosh Rebello, Nikita Nadkarni and Amogh Prabhudesai.
Water Resources Ddepartment officials CE Sandeep Nadkarni, Addl CE Kamat, SE Patilsaheb, EE Gopinath Dessai, AE Suresh Babu and Consultant Chetan Pandit also played an important role in pursuing the matter vigrously before the tribunal.
Sources in Delhi informed that Karnataka had come to the court in full force, along with media as well as musical band, to celebrate the victory, presuming that the order would be passed in their favour.
Following this interim order, the hearing would now continue before the tribunal.
