Collector ensures sexual harassment complaints coms. in media houses

North Goa Collector Nila Mohan has ensured that all the media houses set up internal committees to probe sexual harassment at workplace.

She assured a delegation of Goa Union of Journalists to take up the matter very seriously as GUJ demanded to inspect all the media organisations.

In a memorandum submitted to Mohan, GUJ brought to her notice that several media organisations in the state had failed to set up the 'Internal Complaints Committee' as mandated under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013.

This included newspapers, news periodicals, cable TV channels as well as online news portals.

The delegation also informed the Collector that GUJ had sent notices to these organizations asking them to set up such committees for the benefit of women working in these organizations, failing which they would invite penal provisions.

“Absence of the committee, even two years after the Act came into force, would dissuade victims of sexual harassment from reporting an offence/abuse. This obviously  creates an atmosphere that could be detrimental to the safety and well-being of women employees,” stated the GUJ memorandum.
