India's waterman urges PM for Mhadei diversion, hearing adjourned

Magsaysay award winning environmentalist Rajendra Singh has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene for diversion of Mhadei water by Karnataka while the hearing on the water dispute before the tribunal has been adjourned by two months.

The next hearing has now been fixed o 27 April.

As predicted, retired Justice J M Panchal, chairman of the Mhadei Water Dispute Tribunal, could not attend today’s hearing.

Goa’s first witness, hydrologist Dr Jyoti Prakash, was supposed to depose before the tribunal today.

On the other hand, Karnataka’s attempt to divert Mhadei water got a boost in the arm with India’s waterman Rajendra Singh consistently supporting Mhadei water diversion.

As reported by the The Hindu from Bidar, Singh reiterated that he supports the project though he is against such diversions from one river to the other due to environmental reasons.

This diversion from River Mhadei to River Malprabha would not cause any environmental damage, claimed Singh.

The water harvesting campaigner has also claimed that Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadanvis has supported the diversion.
