Karnataka on destruction spree, Malprabha river origin damaged at Kankumbi

In a desperate attempt to complete the work of Kalsa-Banduri canal, Karnataka government has gone on a destruction spree at Kankumbi.

Defying Goa’s opposition, the southern state is constructing a canal on Karnataka side of Goa border to divert water of River Mhadei to River Malprabha.

In the bargain, it has now destroyed a tank of Kankumbi, which is regarded as origin of River Malprabha.

The hill cutting has caused danger to the Mauli temple as well as the village of Kankumbi, posing fear of landslide in the coming monsoon.

The photo shows at what depth the work is going on with no concern for environment and social living of Kankumbi.

As a result of destruction-oriented cutting, a portion of the hall of Mauli temple also collapsed last night.

The pit adjoining the temple has also developed cracks.

The round-the-clock work carried out by Karnataka Niravari Nigam has brought immense pressure on the life of the villagers, whose woes are not heard by their own government.

While Karnataka claims to have been diverting the water to meet drinking water problem of Huballi and Dharwad districts, people of Kankumbi are presently facing an acute shortage of drinking water as the ongoing construction has caused damage to all the underground sources of water.
