Goa’s Covid bulletin refined, 79% getting cured, but ‘hiding’ continues

As per the changing scenario of Covid19 pandemic in Goa, the Directorate of Health Services has finally come out with a refined format of media bulletin. It now provides a much better picture of the pandemic in the state, including its positive sides. But, sadly, it continues hiding daily new positive and cured patients at each health centre. As a result, 98% cases are hidden in today’s Covid bulletin.

While the Goa government tells us fresh and cured cases of today only at the state level, people are not told whether cases are increasing or reducing in their villages or cities, on the lines of Kerala government which provides data up to the level of local bodies.

Compared to 1.5 million population of Goa, Kerala is a 50 million-strong with 1200 panchayats and municipalities. Goa does not even have 200 local bodies. Displaying its people-centric spirit, Kerala calls its Covid website ‘Jag Rath’ (Chariot of Awareness). It provides tables and graphs of daily scenario from state to village level.

(Click here Covid Jagratha, choose ‘Dashboard’, then ‘Test & Contacts’ and go on pressing the buttons & Views. You will reach up to the Local Body.)

INFORMATIVE NEW BULLETIN

In a new format of the Goa Media Bulletin, the DHS now provides number of patients in home isolation, hospitals as well as the tests per million and recovery rate.

In addition, the old details continue to be provided like samples tested, cumulative and newly found positive cases, recovered patients, deaths as well as active cases as on today.

It states that the recovery rate of Goa right now is 79% with 19,648 patients have recovered out of 24,898 Covid positive cases.

Though the bulletin does not show the percentage, the death rate is also mere 1.2% with 304 deaths.

Compared to other small states, Goa death rate, however, is quite high except Puducherry. (Read “Goa best in Covid testing, but deaths are alarming”)

Goans are also seen responding well to home isolation rather than immediately rushing to the hospital in panic, once found Covid positive. Compared to 173 new patients hospitalised, 338 new patients are in home isolation, states the bulletin.

CENTRE-WISE DAILY CASES HIDDEN

The same spirit however has not reflected in disclosing available figures at each health centre. The DHS provides only the total figure of active Covid19 cases at each centre, probably after adding today’s positive cases and subtracting today’s cured cases at each centre.

The available data is not added in two additional columns of today’s positive and today’s cured cases at each health centre, for the best reasons known to the DHS authorities.

As a result, the routine comparative analysis of goanews.com shows that out of 306 positive cases found today, only 24 could be traced at seven health centres.

These are Loutolim (8), Margao (4), Bicholim, Aldona and Navelim (3 each), Marcaim (2) and Quepem (1).

It is not told to the public at which health centres the remaining 282 cases (92%) are found. In fact, the impression is being given that cases are reducing at other 26 centres.

But even the figures of recoveries are not fully genuine. The bulletin states that 519 cases got cured today. But goanews.com could trace only 250 (48%).
