Centre bans 350 cough syrups, pain killers, anti-diabetics etc
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 15 March 2016 23:30 ISTThe union of ministry of health has banned almost 350 popular drugs including cough syrups, cough suppressants for adults and children, pain killers, anti-diabetic and other drugs.
Chemists and Druggists Association Goa has welcomed the long-awaited step of the central government and has appealed to the doctors not to prescribe while appealing their fellow pharmacists not to sell these drugs and medicines.
The Directorate of Food and Drug Administration has uploaded the list of all the official gazettes on its website (click here to read).
Some of the popular drugs, which are banned, are as followed:
Cough syrups like Corex and Phensedyl, syrups for children like Tixylix and Portussa, syrups for adults like Astoril-D and Respira-D, pain killers like Nimegesic, Zerodole-P and Ace Proxyvon as well as anti-diabetic like Pioz MF and Tripride.
While giving this information at a press conference, CDAG president Prasad Tamba has also appealed the pharmacies and hospitals to keep aside these drugs by labelling it ‘Banned Drugs Not For Sale’ until the recalled drugs are returned.
Some of these drugs were available over the counters and even at unauthrised places. Even medical practioners liberally prescribed some of these drugs despite warnings of serious health hazards for last several decades. Even small country like Babgla Desh had imposed ban. But our past govts wavered for unknown reasons. We should thank and appreciate present central govt for its "intolerance" towards public health.
There are many drugs like say corex which is used by people as cheap intoxicant. Huge doses of anti biotics like tetracycline enters our body via poultry foods. Declofenac drug administered as pain killer is known to damage kidneys. This became evident when vultures has gone extinct with consumption of this drug served to cattles. There can be n no of such instances. Our NGOs and organisations demanding peace n justice instead being obstructionists and extortionists should obtain list of banned drugs and enlighten people, doctors and drug vendors. Is media listening?
