Goa’s traditional balanced diet keeps malnourishment away: Varsha

“Goa barely has any case of malnourishment since our traditional diet is balanced and full with nutritive contents,” said Varsha Naik, Assistant Professor at the Goa College of Home Science.

She released the much awaited English edition of ‘Potpuja’, originally a Konkani cookbook of Goa’s traditional and authentic cuisine, published by Printer’s Devil.

At a function organised at Ravindra Bhavan in Margao, Naik said ‘Potpuja’ is an ideal book of Goan recipes, which contains all the essential nutritive values required to live a healthy life.

“I researched on the book in terms of nutrition and presented it at a national conference, telling the national audience how diet balance was maintained by our ancestors in Goa,” Naik elaborated.

She said a book ‘On Potpuja’ as well as a Mobile App, providing the nutritive values of each recipe could help the younger generation to maintain their health with Goa’s ancestral cuisine.

Usha Vaman Bale, whose original Konkani cookbook made a record of going into a second edition within 18 days of release and a third edition within five months, said modestly that her only contribution to the book is arranging the delicious recipes of her grandmother in a time-table format to make cooking easier for the younger generation.

Sapna Sardesai, the publisher who has published several recipe books to date, said  that the USP of author Mrs Bale’s’ ‘Potpuja’ is using each and every part of  vegetables and fruits in an innovative manner to make a delicious dish.

‘Potpuja’ not only provides over 200 recipes but dynamic time-tables of five weeks each of breakfasts and vegetarian meals as well as three-week time table of non-vegetarian meals along with evening snacks, she revealed.

Dinesh Manerkar, publisher of the Konkani edition of ‘Potpuja’ and an eminent writer, appealed to the Goan housewives to pen down all the traditional Goan recipes, which are fast becoming extinct, that would help future generations in this era of fast foods.

He also announced that another book by Mrs Bale, on the dishes and sweets prepared during Hindu festivals, would be published shortly.

The books are made available at all the possible book stalls all over Goa as well as on-line through a website (click) in its Cuisine section of Goan Publications.

Best recipe book. How about including it as part of wedding gift for "newly wed couples". This will preserve Goan food culture as also guarantee good health of gen-next.
