Karnad withdraws resignation; no assurance given: CM

Noted playwright and actor Girish Karnad withdrew his resignation from the Goa Development Council, after chief minister Digambar Kamat spoke to him.

Karnad had put in his papers in protest of the state administration failing to provide any protection to the painting exhibition of noted Goan scholar Jose Pereira.

The Hindu Janjagruti Samiti had demanded ban on Pereira's painting exhibition since the Sanskrit scholar had portrayed Lord Krishna in an obscene manner, due to which their ‘religious sentiments' were hurt.

The Goa Development Council, under the chairmanship of Dr Raghunath Mashelkar, is being formed to formulate Goa Vision programmes, on the occasion of golden jubilee of Goa's liberation.

Karnad had felt that there was no point in working on Goa Vision document when the government could not uphold freedom of expression and provide protection to the artists in the state.

Karnad later on confirmed that Karnad has withdrawn his resignation based on the assurance given by the chief minister that such things would not be repeated in future.

When contacted by media persons, chief minister Kamat however said he has not given any assurance to Karnad.

"I told him I was not around when this incident had happened and requested him to withdraw his resignation. I am happy that he has agreed", said Kamat.
