Covid19: 98% recovering but Bardez exploding; May getting scary…

423 deaths due to Covid19 in mere 32 days is, no doubt, quite scary. In fact the number of Covid deaths has shot up in the first two days of May; 78 deaths till the afternoon of 2nd May. But, in reality, it is not as scary as it sounds, except Bardez taluka, which has now become the hub of the pandemic.

The recovery rate is almost 98 per cent while the death rate varies between little over two per cent in Bardez to merely 0.38 per cent in Sattari.

As per the Covid19 bulletin released yesterday by the Directorate of Health Services (DHS),  Goa right now has 24,194 active Covid19 cases while the deadly virus has taken a toll of only 423, though these were also our precious lives.

Deaths are occurring within two to 10 days of becoming Covid positive. It means the death figures which we get  today were infected at least a week ago. If we succeed in breaking the chain by wearing mask, maintaining social distancing, sanitising and moving out only if necessary, Goa can bring the situation under control within no time.

But due the utter negligence on our part as irresponsible citizens and money-centric ruling politicians, Goa has today reached the ranks of first five states in Active Ratio of Covid19 cases. It’s Lakshadweep 41%, Rajasthan 30%, Uttarakhand 28% and Goa as well as Karnataka 26%.

MAY SCARIER THAN APRIL

Covid19 cases started rising since April while the spurt of deaths were reported in the second fortnight, perhaps due to religious festivals and large gatherings like wedding ceremonies etc as well as municipal elections and large influx of tourists.

The media of Goa, on a daily basis, releases figures of deaths that have occurred in 24 hours since the mortality bulletin is released with deaths occurring till the afternoon. The post-noon deaths are reported in the next day’s bulletin. In order to get a real picture of a day, goanews.com has now compiled the figures date-wise (see the table).

As per these figures, hardly one or two-three persons succumbed to the deadly virus in the first fortnight of April while there was not a single death reported for four days.

But the picture suddenly started changing since 18th of April, reporting 13 deaths in a day. The graph started shooting up with 34 casualties on 28th April while we lost 25 to 30 lives each for five days in this second fortnight.

And it has now become scarier with the number of deaths shooting up to 53 on  the first day of May while 25 deaths were reported in the first half of the second day of the month.

BARDEZ OUT OF CONTROL

Unlike Mormugao in the previous phase of Covid19, this time it is Bardez taluka. Almost one third of the cases as well as deaths have occured in this major taluka of North Goa, out of the total 12 talukas we have.

Bardez is having 6184 active Covid19 cases right now (26%) and 130 deaths (31%) out of total 423 deaths occurred since April in 12 talukas of Goa.

The taluka has six health centres, out of which three are the hotspots: 1611 cases at Candolim, 1375 at Porvorim and 1314 at Mapusa. Total 4300 cases out of 6184, means 70 per cent cases at these three out of total six centres.

Second in the line is again Mormugao taluka, but it has reported only(?) 61 deaths since April, which is less than half reported in Bardez alone (130 deaths).

Active Covid19 cases are also less than 3000 in this industrial belt with maximum reported again in Zuarinagar (Cortalim PHC: 1346 cases). Comparatively, the port town of Vasco has only 711 active cases.

The largest populated taluka of Goa is Salcete, but the active cases are 3710 while deaths occurred are 58, around one and a half per cent.

FOUR VERSUS EIGHT

With 2868 active cases of Tiswadi taluka added to this, these four talukas are presently largely affected with Covid cases, almost 65 per cent (15732 cases).

Similar is the situation in terms of Covid19 deaths. Little over 71 per cent deaths have occured in these four talukas, which comes to 301.

The number of deaths comes down to almost half later, with Ponda reporting 24 deaths. It then slips down to only single digits in four talukas, including two each in Sattari and Sanguem (See the table).

There are also 19 deaths, whose location is not mentioned in the mortality bulletin issued by the Goa Medical College every day.

Goa has also reported 17 deaths of the people from outside Goa, including 13 from Maharashtra and one each from Karnataka, Odisha, West Bengal and Haryana.
