‘Chovoth’ outbreak subsiding, will it be a repeat show during Navratri & Diwali?

Goa’s Covid19 death rate continues to fluctuate, unlike the impression that it is declining. However, active cases have reduced tremendously this month after the Chovoth outbreak.
It remains to be seen whether Goans would learn from the Chovoth experience and exercise restraint during Navratri and then Diwali, especially the Narkasur night.
Sunday, 20th October came as a big relief as only two deaths were reported on that day. But among the nine deaths reported in the last two days, eight deaths occurred yesterday. Six of them were reported today.
Till now, only one death reported having occurred today, that too early morning at 3.
The real picture of today’s deaths however would be clear probably by tomorrow since the mortality bulletin is prepared by the afternoon every day.
Goa has lost a total of 564 lives in the last four months, from 22nd June to 22nd October, due to the pandemic.
After four deaths reported in the last week of June from 22nd, July reported 41 deaths which shot up to 150 in August and 234 in September.
Till 22nd October, the toll this month has reached 135. It’s certainly lower than last month. From average eight deaths per day last month, right now it is six deaths on an average per day.

INFANTS DYING
But the real picture is not satisfactory since deaths shot up to eight, nine, 10 and even 13 per day this month. The trend still continues with eight deaths being reported yesterday once again.
No doubt the rate of youngsters succumbing to Covid19 has reduced this month. But unlike in the past, the age group of youngsters is also reducing. In fact, we lost three infants this month, from eight-month-old to three-year-old.
And today, a 20-year old boy from Porvorim, lost his 18-day long battle with Covid19 at GMC hospital. He had no comorbidities but was brought to the hospital with respiratory problems and acute kidney injury.
CHOVOTH WAVE SUBSIDING
The sudden wave of Covid19 after Chovoth festival has however started subsiding now and daily active cases may decline further if Goans exercise restraint during Navratri festival and controlling the careless behaviour of tourists.
In the last 22 days, Goa has reported 8168 active cases. The number was 11,739 active cases last month, till 22nd September. It’s a 20 per cent decline, which means 3571 less number of Covid19 active cases.
The recovery rate has also remained above 90 per cent this month, which is much higher than the national average.
The designated Covid hospitals are also getting less crowded and more and more Goans prefer home isolation.
As per the latest health bulletin, 20,707 Covid19 patients are in home isolation while 11,249 are being hospitalised.
Even today, 53 were admitted in the hospital against 163 sent for home isolation. This is more than double.
