Half of the Covid deaths in Sept, Max in Salcete, spreading in the hinterland

September has been the deadliest month during the Covid19 pandemic to date. More than half of the deaths have occurred this month alone. And the virus has now also started killing people in rural Goa, just not the congested cities.

Out of 428 to date, since the first death reported in Goa on 22nd June, 233 deaths have occurred in September. Total 54 per cent.

But it’s also a sigh of relief that two talukas - Canacona and Dharbandora have not reported a single death last month. Active Covid cases have also come down to 132 and 91 in both these less-populated talukas respectively.

And the rate of getting cured of the virus is also a great solace. It’s almost 84 per cent. Out of 33,418 tested positives so far, 28,125 have recovered. The death rate is thus only 1.28 per cent.

100 DEATHS IN SALCETE

Salcete tops the list with 100 Covid deaths, nearly one-fourth of the total number of deaths. In September itself, this coastal taluka of South Goa lost 49 lives. 17 in Margao alone and 10 more in Navelim, which is also today part of Margao municipality.

In fact, all 10 deaths in Navelim occurred last month. But comparatively, the death toll has started reducing in the main Margao city, including Fatorda. 10 deaths in September out of 57.

After an outbreak of Covid19 in Vasco city and Zuarinagar a couple of months ago, the death rate has started declining in Mormugao taluka, but still second in the list. A total of 84 people have lost lives, out of which 27 were in September.

The port town of Vasco has taken a toll of 64 people till now, out of which 18 were in September. But people of Zuarinagar have fought it well. Only nine deaths out of which four were in September. In spite of the number of active positive cases rising from 85 to 254 in 30 days.

PANAJI, BARDEZ WORST HIT

The capital city of Panaji has been the worst hit in the month of September. 10 out of 15 succumbed to Covid last month. And Tiswadi taluka reported 40 deaths last month out of 68.

The active cases have also zoomed up, from 156 on 1st September to 311 yesterday, the last day of the month.

Among the Old Conquests, the worst hit in September however was Bardez taluka. 73 per cent of Covid deaths were reported in this tourism-dependent taluka - 47 deaths in a month out of a total 64. And in Mapusa city, nine deaths out of a total 16 to date.

Ponda is not less affected. The central taluka of Goa reported 20 deaths out of total 36 in September alone. Also seven deaths in the town out of 13.

DEATHS RISING IN THE HINTERLAND

Though it’s less in terms of number, the situation seems to be aggravating in the talukas of the New Conquests, except Canacona (2) and Dharbandora (1). No deaths in September in both these talukas..

In Bicholim, we have lost 20 lives in September out of a total of 27. Similar is Pernem. 11 people succumbed to Covid last month, taking the total toll to 15. Nearly 75 per cent in both the talukas.

Quepem has also lost six lives in September out of a total of 10. And Sanguem, another hinterland taluka, reported four deaths last month out of a total eight to date.

After one person from West Bengal succumbing to Covid19 earlier, Goa reported four more deaths in September - two from Maharashtra and one each from Karnataka and Tamilnadu.
