Goa’s Covid +ves are more than the national average; is home isolation a trend?

The scenario of the Covid19 pandemic in Goa, compared to the national, is not bad, but also not very good. We are far ahead in testing, but our positive cases are more than the national average. Also, most of the Goans are opting for home isolation, for varied reasons. Why?

The death rate of Goa is less than the national average but substantially high among the smaller states.

Goa is far far ahead in terms of Covid testing. Hardly 4 per cent of people of the total 135 crore population have been tested so far in India. But in Goa, almost 15 per cent, have been tested as on 17 September. Around 2.32 lakh out of 15 lakh to be precise.

The health authorities are testing around 1500 to 2000 people every day.

But the rate of people testing positive for Covid19 is much higher in Goa than the national level. The difference is almost four per cent; eight per cent at the national level, and 12 per cent in Goa.

Is it because we Goans are not following the social distancing norms of the pandemic or the low immunity? The question needs to be investigated by the health authorities.

Obviously, this has reflected in the number of negative cases. Compared to the national average of over 90 per cent, Goa is a little less. 92 per cent against 88 per cent.

The number of patients getting cured is almost similar at the state and national levels. A difference of hardly one per cent; 78 per cent in Goa, and 79 per cent nationally.

GOA’S DEATH RATE SCARY AMONG SMALL STATES

And the death rate also appears to be one percent less than the national average. Two to one percent.

But among the smaller states, Goa ranks second in terms of Covid19 deaths, next to Puducherry.

In a mere 2.42 lakh union territory of Puducherry, a former French colony, the death toll has zoomed up to 431.

The death rate is very low in other union territories.

But among smaller states, Goa is the highest, at 327.

This is the population and death rate in other small states:

WHY HOME ISOLATION?

There is no data available at the national level of the Covid19 patients being in home isolation and hospitalised Covid patients, like Goa.

But Goa seems to be much ahead in home isolation, reducing the pressure on Covid care centres as well as Covid hospitals, once they are tested Covid positive but asymptomatic.

Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant getting cured with home isolation has given confidence to the public in general.

It also proves that many Goans are facing the pandemic quite boldly under self-observation, armed with a Covid kit like a thermometer, digital pulse oximeter, Vitamin C tablets and other treatment like steam and saltwater gargles.

However, there are also some people who prefer to stay at home rather than getting themselves admitted at Covid care centres or Covid hospitals,  due to strong rumours of poor health facilities.

Many patients who were treated at Covid hospitals however told goanews.com that they were looked after very well and facilities there are excellent.

But there are also complaints of no attention is being paid at the Covid care centres, due to which they preferred to get discharged and went for home isolation.

Compared to 202 Covid19 patients being hospitalised at this date in Goa, 356 are getting quarantined in home isolation.

In terms of percentage, 26 per cent of patients are hospitalised while 41 per cent are getting themselves treated in home isolation.
