Goa University’s ex-Reader Prof Sahni to take over as new VC
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 19 July 2016 21:49 ISTGoa University has found one of its former Reader as a new vice chancellor. Prof Varun Sahni is expected to take over in November.
He would succeed Dr Satish Shetye, who was granted one year extension by issuing special ordinance by Goa government.
Dr Shetye’s extended term would end in October.
Prof Sahani’s name has been shortlisted and recommended to Governor Mridula Sinha by a three-member search committee.
The high profile committee included Dr Raghunath Mashelkar, Dr Ashank Desai and Prof Balwant Jani.
Sahni, professor in international politics, has also served as the vice chancellor Jammu University for four years from 2008.
He was teaching as a Reader at the faculty of Latin American Studies of Goa University. He has been also the visiting faculty here till recently.
Presently teaching at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Prof Sahni is also the chairperson of Centre for International Politics, Organisation and Disarmament (CIPOD).
He edits South Asian Survey, an international peer review journal of repute, since 2006 at the National Defence College (NDC), New Delhi and has been Jury Member of the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding.
An Inlaks Scholar, he wrote his doctoral dissertation on the political role of the Argentine Navy at the University of Oxford in 1991.
Before joining the JNU faculty in 1995, Sahni was Junior Research Fellow in Politics and Junior Dean at Lincoln College, Oxford and Resident Fellow of the Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Contemporary Studies in New Delhi.
He has been visiting professor/fellow at Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, NM; Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas (CIDE), Mexico City; National Defense University, Washington, DC (2003, under the Fulbright Military Academies Initiative) and the Asia Pacific College of Diplomacy, The Australian National University, Canberra (2008).
