Another GCA scam of Rs 5.87 Cr alleged, Nilesh files complaint

Yet another former Ranaji cricketer has brought yet another alleged scandal of Rs 5.87 crore of the Goa Cricket Association to the light.

Nilesh Prabhudesai has filed a complaint before the Economic Offences Cell of Goa police, alleging a fraud committed by GCA’s high profile trio – president Chetan Desai, secretary Vinod Phadke and treasurer Akbar Mullah, presently under police arrest.

Police custody of the trio was extended today by four more days. They were arrested on 15th June in two fraud cases of total Rs 3.13 crore.

According to Prabhudesai, the amount of Rs 5,87,22,055 was paid by BCCI to the GCA vide cheque number 100300 dated 31st March 2008.

The amount does not reflect either in the balance sheet of 2007-08 or 2008-09, he claims.

“I suspect the hand of this trio since they were the office bearers of the GCA during the same period”, he alleges.

He has thus urged the police to probe into GCA accounts as well as BCCI records and also the chartered accountants and find out who has siphoned of this huge amount.

“It is quite possible that the trio opened yet another fake account in some private bank and withdrew all the money”, said Prabhudesai.

The trio is presently arrested on the charge of depositing one cheque of Rs 2.87 crore received from the BCCI, by opening a fake GCA account in a private bank.

The other charge is withdrawing Rs 26 lakh by issuing a bearer cheque of GCA in one name and showing it as payment to some other agency, which never received this payment.

Meanwhile, the JMFC Panaji extended the remand of the arrested trio by four more days.

Whole day was spent before the JMFC by their lawyer Adv Subodh Kantak, arguing on their bail application.

PP Poonam Bharne would argue for the police on Wednesday.

The high profile trio of the GCA has been in the custody for the last five days.

Two among them – Chetan Desai and Vinod Phadke – are also suspended from the respective committees of the BCCI.

The apex cricket control body has also served them show cause notices, asking why action should not be initiated against them, to be replied within a fortnight.

This association is Goa Corruption Association. All it did over the years is foster nepotism and filled coffers of some selected folks. Isn't it shameful that Goa did not even produce a single cricketer worth its salt in the last several years.
