Go back to fishing if rent-a-car eat up taxi business, suggests Sudin
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 13 January 2016 14:37 ISTIf rent-a-car system deprives local youth of fisher folk community from running the taxi business, then they should go back to their traditional occupation of fishing.
This is the solution transport minister Sudin Dhawalikar suggested today when Benaulim MLA Caitu Silva raised the issue of rent-a-car contract given to agency from outside Goa.
“Goa’s fisheries department has the best schemes available in the whole country. The local youth from the fisher folk community should opt for it”, he suggested.
Caitu was trying to convince the government how small restaurants and taxi business is crucial for the local youth of fisher folk community from the coastal belt of Salcete taluka.
He also alleged that the outside agency running rent-a-car business were illegally engaging private cars as taxis in violation of the contract.
Dhawalikar said he is prepared to conduct an inquiry in this regard if proper complaint is made.
The minister also informed the House that the agency is given licence to run 136 taxis.
However, he said, the matter is presently subjudice thus much cannot be talked about it.
He also said that the government has imposed moratorium till March this year and decision to have more such taxis would be taken only after that.
The minister also informed that 15,144 rent-a-bikes have been given licences under this scheme.
Dhawalikar agreed to Nilesh Cabral’s suggestion to make parking arrangement for these two-wheelers since they are presently parked on the road, creating traffic congestion.
Taxi owners should go back to their business of fishing!
