Mining truck owners reject Govt proposal, strike to continue

Mining truck owners have rejected the government proposal and decided to continue their strike.

They will start blocking the entire mining stretch once again from tomorrow.

Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar had intervened on Saturday to find an amicable solution on the ongoing strike of mining truck owners against Sesa Company.

He had requested the striking truck owners to accept the company rate of Rs eight per tonne per kilometre to transport the iron ore, with an assurance to increase the rate once the dollar improves.

“Our truck owners are not prepared to accept the proposal”, Nilkanth Gawas, president of the All Goa Truck Association said.

As assured to the CM, the AGTA members had a meeting of around 400 truck owners at Usgao today.

They would thus continue the road blockade at Pale-Kothambi junction on the old Bombay road.

The AGTA members had not allowed the trucks hired by the Sesa to transport ore to ply on the road.

Even one of the trucks was set on fire.

While Sesa has offered to pay Rs eight, the truck owners are demanding more than double – Rs 17.32 per tonne per km, to transport the ore.

While truck owners are demanding high price due to hike in diesel price, the Sesa Company expresses difficulty due to fluctuation in dollar rate and crashed price of iron ore in the international market.

The whole mining industry is awaiting the outcome of the ongoing strike since Sesa is the first company to start mining and transporting the ore after the ban of mining was lifted by the Supreme Court.

Goa’s mines were banned from extracting ore from October 2012 by the Supreme Court due to rampant illegal mining.
