CM’s efforts to withdraw strike fail, truckers put counter-proposal

Efforts of Goa chief minister to get the mining truck owners’ strike withdrawn before defence minister Manohar Parrikar’s 60th birthday failed while truck owners placed a counter proposal.

After having a rally in the whole mining belt from Usgao to Shirgao, the All Goa Truck Owners’ Association attended a meeting convened by CM Laxmikant Parsekar in Panaji, along with Sesa company.

Parsekar reportedly assured to increase the rates of transport once dollar improves in the international market.

However, truck owners are still hesitant to accept the proposal.

On the contrary, they have put forward a counter-proposal to the Sesa mining company to work on the rate they have offered, Rs eight per tonne per kilometre, but conditionally.

The condition is that the company should increase the rate by one rupee every time the dollar improves.

The company has not accepted the proposal yet.

“He is people’s chief minister. He should think of our welfare, not of the mining company”, said Nilkanth Gawas, the truck owners’ president after the company.

The meeting was also attended by deputy speaker Anant Shet and Sankhli MLA Pramod Sawant.

Gawas has said their strike would continue till the rates are not revised by the company, no matter they continue without business.

He has however agreed to discuss CM’s proposal to his associates and take a final decision.

US dollor dominates international trade. Developing countries are devaluing their currencies to make export competitive. Hence, when would truckers get better rate?
