Hema demands 'murder' probe in Fr Bismarque death case

Goa’s Bollywood singer and a close friend of Fr Bismarque Dias, Hema Sardesai, now suspect his death to be a murder.

Hema, along with few other close friends of Fr Bismarque, today staged a Satyagraha in front of police headquarters in Panaji, defying section 144.

Congress legislator Alex Reginald Lourenco also joined them later in a delegation to Inspector General of Police Sunil Garg.

Garg has assured them to expedite the investigation by getting the viscera report of Fr Bismarque as fast as possible.

While the delegation wanted to know why the ‘unnatural death’ has not been registered as a murder, Garg reportedly told them it would be established once the viscera report arrives from Hyderabad.

“We have told him not to take the case lightly or it would turn into a state-wide agitation”, Prajal Sakhardande, the heritage worker, told

The Bismarque death case is presently shifted from Old Goa police to the crime branch of Goa police, due to public pressure.

Lourenco, who has a different view on this shiftover, opined that such shifting midway leaves behind the evidence the earlier investigating agency had collected, hampering the process of reaching the truth.

“These social activists don’t understand this”, he told, after coming out of the police headquarters.

Hema was also accompanied by Armando Gonsalves and Adv Jatin Naik in a delegation.

Hema had earlier blasted the agitators, alleging politicisation of the issue by quite a few, who are less in numbers but shout aloud.

“Nobody knows Fr Bismarque better than me”, she had said.

She had published a first person account in a daily The Goan describing how Fr Bismarque was suffering with depression while fighting several social issues on the other hand.

Later, at a press conference, the Goan singer of national fame had clarified that she did not mean that Fr Bismarque committed suicide but felt that the only way to get speedy justice was to pressurise the police for a proper investigation.

Fr Bismarque, a priest-turned-activist, had died in the creek of his St Estevam village on 6 November, the day he went missing.

His dead body was found floating the next day morning little ahead from Babhol Manos (a sluice gate) where had gone for a swim post-midnight of 5 November.

Two teenage boys accompanying him told the Old Goa police that three of them had drunk almost two cartons of beer, since evening till midnight of 5 November, after which he had gone swimming in the creek.

The boys came home next day morning but not Fr Bismarque, whose clothes, sandals and mobile were found on the banks of the river.

While the first post-mortem report conducted at GMC hospital stated that he died due to drowning, relatives and social activists refused to believe it since he was receiving threat calls for some days.

The second post-mortem was demanded due to injuries found on his body. The second autopsy stated that the injury marks were not pre-mortem but marks of aquatic creatures.

While second autopsy has suggested waiting for viscera report and chemical analysis to know the actual cause of death, social activists and relatives had demanded a thorough probe into the tragic death of Fr Bismarque, from all angles.

The issue took a dramatic turn when activist friends of Fr Bismarque found a blood-stained vest, similar to the brand the activist priest was using, 25 metres away from the sluice gate on 17 November, almost 10 days after his death. is now on Telegram & also Youtube.
