Goa streets to be powered by conventional LED lights

The whole state of Goa will have energy-saving conventional energy LED street lights within six months.

The state cabinet today decided to allot the work to the Electricity Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL), a central agency.

“It will save 50 per cent energy to the tune of 37 million units per annum, worth Rs 18. 90 crore”, said Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar.

Goa has decided to implement the Street Light National Programme (SLNP), a central government project.

The total cost of the project is RS 92.33 crore, out of which the EESL will contribute 20 per cent (Rs 18.46 crore) in terms of equity.

The rest 80 per cent would be raised by the central agency through financial institutions, said Parsekar.

Goa will pay back the equity contribution back to the EESL, but in 10 years, on the basis of monthly payment.

And the best part of it, said Parsekar, is that the maintenance of the street lights would also be looked after by the EESL, for the first 10 years.
