Goa loses ace criminal lawyer in Albano Viegas

Goa’s ace criminal lawyer Albano Viegas expired today.
He was 67.
The funeral will leave his Velim residence, for a church at Tollecanto at 4 pm.
He is a middle brother of elder sister and social activist Auda Viegas and lawyer-cum-activist Adv Anacleto Viegas, his younger brother.
Known for his frankness without any malice, Adv Viegas enjoyed great respect among the legal fraternity as a finest human being.
He was also a great support to several social movements in the state, may it be the student movement of ‘80s or the trade union movement or the agitations of traditional fishermen and toddy tappers.
He has been practicing law for the last 40 years, since 1975, and was considered the most competent criminal lawyer in the state.
Perhaps this is the reason he always had large number of juniors working under him, many of whom have also grown to be equally competent criminal lawyers today.
Adv Viegas initially made his base in Ponda for several years, after which he shifted to Quepem and then Margao.
He had recently moved back to their ancestral house in Velim.
