Goa prisoners beaten up mercilessly, in violation of human rights

A major case of human rights violation has come to light, of mercilessly beating up not less than 15 prisoners, including foreigners, at the Colvale central jail on Saturday.

Elvis Gomes, Director of Prisons, confirmed the incident, stating that he would personally inquire into it.

“I have also sought a report from the jail superintendent”, he told goanews.com.

Gomes said the incident came to light when three jail inmates were produced today before NDPS judge Desmond D’Costa in Mapusa.

The Goa Human Rights Commission has also instituted its own independent inquiry while a lawyer of couple of foreigner prisoners has complained to the respective embassies, seeking intervention.

“It is alleged that some prisoners were beaten up by jail authorities when they were shifted from Sada sub-jail and Mapusa judicial custody to Colvale central jail”, Gomes told goanews.com.

The jail authorities had transferred total 122 prisoners, including 72 from Sada sub-jail and 50 from the Mapusa judicial custody to Colvale.

According to sources, some of the prisoners refused to get admitted in the new jail, due to which they were mercilessly beaten up by the jail authorities.

The horrific incident came to light when three prisoners, including one each from Israel and Russia, showed the beating marks on their bodies to NDPS judge D’Costa.

The judge immediately sent them for medical check-up, including two of them to the orthopaedics department of Goa Medical College hospital.

The prisoners also told the court that not less than 15 prisoners were mercilessly beaten up.

Sources said the prisoners refused to get admitted in the new central jail as the Sada sub-jail has better facilities than Colvale.

“I will personally find out the facts since this is a major human rights violation and cannot be taken lightly”, said Gomes.
