Sex scam : Police - CM contradict
11 June 2001 22:10 IST A fortnight has passed and no breakthrough has been made in the sex scandal, alleged by the state chief minister himself.
"We are only doing enquiries, but the actual investigation would begin only after the FIR is filed", states Apa Teli, the SP (crime branch). He admits that no complainant has come forward till date.
A public statement in this regard was made by chief minister Manohar Parrikar, alleging involvement of sons of top politicians, most of who belong to the opposition Congress.
Presumably, the scandal on the lines of Jalgaon sex scam, was being masterminded by the city's loan shark, in collusion with sons of a few politicians. By attracting girls from a nearby college at Miramar to the cyber cafe, the racket was being run.
Providing them a cola bottle free of cost, the racketeers were reportedly mixing sleeping drugs into it and the girls in a drowsy mood were then taken to the empty flats in the building, to be photographed in compromising positions.
"It is a very serious case of coercion and blackmailing", states the chief minister, claiming that people are coming forward to file complaints. The police however continue denying that any complaint has been filed so far.
Though he did not state directly, Karnal Singh, the DIG of Police, admitted that the press reports which appeared in this regard made it difficult for them to investigate since the place became deserted from that day.
Parrikar however claims that he made a public statement, which appeared in the press, as a strategy so that the victims or their parents come forward fearlessly to file a complaint in this regard.
Nirmala Sawant, the Goa PCC chief, has dared chief minister to prove the charges or resign but not to unnecessarily malign image of the Congressmen without any substance.
Taking up her challenge, Parrikar has stated that Sawant's family members will not send her to the Congress House when the scandal would be finally exposed. He still appears confident of getting the whole scandal exposed, which allegedly also involves some top bureaucrats and police officers.
Political circles feel that Parrikar has deliberately made the issue public, with a clear political intention of damaging the Congress but helping destroy the evidence since some of his blue-eyed boys are also involved in it. The chief minister however flatly denies the observation.
Even the police claim that the enquiries made in this regard have given them some clues, but decline to comment further. "They have gathered three leads", claims Parrikar.
