Modi welcomes Advani withdrawing resignation

Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi has welcomed L K Advani’s decision to withdraw his resignation from top three posts of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Soon after BJP national president Rajnath Singh announced Advani’s decision, Modi twitted: “I had said yesterday that Advani ji will not disappoint lakhs of Karyakartas. Today, I whole heartedly welcome his decision!”

The rift between two hardcore Hindutwawadi leaders was visible from the day national executive meeting started in Goa on 7 June.

Apparently as his protest against the proposal of making Modi the election committee chief, Advani had not attended the national executive meeting for the first time in his life, citing health reasons.

The BJP leaders kept on accusing the media for cooking up false stories of the rift and announced the decision on appointing Modi as the poll panel chief on Sunday, 9 June, claiming it to be unanimous.

Proving their claims false, Advani reacted yesterday by sending his resignation letter, quitting all the three key posts as the member of the Parliamentary Board, Election Committee and the National Executive.

Modi, while addressing a workers’ rally on Sunday in Goa, also did not utter Advani’s name but mentioned only Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Unlike other leaders, Modi also did not condemn the demonstration staged by pro-Modi workers in front of Advani’s house the same day.

The Gujarat chief minister neither went to Delhi to seek his blessings nor attended the Parliamentary Board meeting in Delhi, saying he can’t reach the national capital at such a short notice.

However, after Advani withdrew his resignation today evening, he tweeted from Gujarat, welcoming the decision of the party patriarch, who had always stood by him at crucial times, including Gujarat riots of 2002.
