Petrol becomes cheaper than diesel in Goa

Diesel has become costlier in Goa than petrol as diesel was hiked by around one more rupee from midnight.

Diesel was Rs 51.34 in Goa (with variations from city-to-city), which would cost Rs 1.10 more now, costing around Rs 52.44.

Petrol, on the contrary, would continue costing Rs 51.94 in South Goa and much cheaper in some areas.

It would be cheaper by at least 50 paise right now and would be much cheaper in different areas, depending on distance from Vasco, from where petrol and diesel is transported.

On 30 April, petrol prices were slashed by almost Rs 3 per litre.

In addition, Goa has practically no VAT on petrol, which makes it much cheaper.

IOC said it has decided to increase retail selling price of diesel from midnight tonight by “Rs. 0.90 per litre (excluding VAT) covering the increase for the months of April and May 2013.”

The government had in January authorised state-owned oil firms to hike diesel prices by small doses of up to 50 paisa per litre every month till such time that their losses on the fuel sale are completely wiped out.

Though petrol prices were deregulated in June 2010, they rarely moved in tandem with cost. However, since January, they have more or less moved in step with international prices with oil firms revising rates every fortnight.
