Use social networking to promote culture: Guv
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 23 August 2012 21:42 IST‘Catch them young’ should be the motto by utilising modern equipments like mobiles and social networking websites to spread traditional values through cultural means like music and drama, says Goa governor Bharat Vir Wanchoo.
He has advised a nationwide movement like SPIC MACAY to promote art and culture through social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, You Tube etc.
Wanchoo was speaking at the Goa state advisory board meeting of SPIC MACAY, held at the Raj Bhavan today morning.
Some of the members at the meeting had raised concern over diversion of the younger generation to new social networking activities like FB, Twitter etc while forgetting traditional culture and ethos.
“These are a reality and we have to face it. In fact we should use it to promote our own cause”, Wanchoo told the advisory board members.
He also pointed out that 70 per cent of Indian population is below 35 years of age and 50 per cent is below 25 years.
“The movement like SPIC MACAY thus has a major responsibility to build the Young India with the traditional culture and values deep rooted in them,” said the Governor.
Otherwise, we would be a tree without roots, he observed.
Wanchoo also upheld the observation made by few educationists at the meeting that the whole education needs to be re-focussed with planned orientation.
He also appealed the members to focus more upon the rural sector and strengthen the values among the underprivileged.
The meeting was attended by Kala Academy chairman Vishnu Wagh, Chief Secretary B Vijayan, Founder Chairperson of SPIC MACAY Padmashree Dr. Kiran Seth, Central State Facilitator for Goa and Maharashtra Kunda Mahurkar besides other members of the Board.
Assistant professor Dr Radhika Vathsan of Bits Pilani on the occasion made a presentation highlighting the activities of SPIC MACAY in the country as well as in Goa.
Bits Pilani is organising three-day state convention of SPIC MACAY, beginning from tomorrow morning.
It includes concerts by Mohan Veena player Padmashree Pt Vishwamohan Bhatt, vocalist Sh Jayateerth Mevundi, Santoor player Padmavibhushan Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma and Bharatnatyam by Swati Daithankar.
