Steel bridge over Calvim river by March next year
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 15 March 2012 15:44 ISTParrikar visiting Calvim river site
The Calvim bridge would now finally come up by March next year.
Chief minister Manohar Parrikar has said the work on Corona-Calvim river would start by July this year and the bridge would be completed in eight months.
The long-pending issue had suddenly become a state-wide controversy when a passenger bus plunged into the river on 18 February, killing six persons including 4 school students.
The issue also got reflected in the recently concluded Assembly election. Former Congress MLA Dayanand Narvekar lost election to BJP MLA Glen Ticlo.
Parrikar yesterday visited the site along with MLA Ticlo and state officials.
He also distributed a compensation of Rs two lakh each to the families of the victims from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
Parrikar is planning a steel bridge over the river that would also become a tourist attraction.
A cable-stayed bridge connecting Aldona to Khorjuvem, built during his tenure, is already an attraction for tourists.
Parrikar yesterday instructed Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation to immediately start the bridge work.
GSIDC managing director Sanjit Rodricks accompanied him during the visit.
He also instructed electricity department to immediately realign the 11 KV overhead line to facilitate the bridge construction.
Chief electrical engineer Nirmal Braganza also accompanied him during the visit.
Also present were Calvim panch Freddy Pontes and local Communidade member Melwyn Fernandes.
We request Hon. C.M. Mr. Manohar Parrikar to resolve the long-pending issue of Talpona and Galgibag bridges on high priority.
Thanks a million !!
