Thivim villagers oppose crick stadium in paddy fields

The farmers in the village of Thivim prefer their paddy fields to Indian premier League (IPL) after Goa Cricket Association (GCA) has moved to acquire their land for the stadium.

"We don't want to host IPL.. instead, give us some water so that we can sow the seeds and harvest the paddy," Uday Malwankar, a farmer from Thivim village in North Goa, told PTI.

The village group was in Panaji yesterday to attend the special meeting conveyed by Goa Bachao Abhiyaan. They will be meet Chief Minister Digamber Kamat next week with grievances related to land misuse.

The cricket stadium is a part of Board of Cricket Control of India (BCCI) initiative to construct cricket infrastructure across the country. Goa cabinet has already given in-principle approval for this project in March 2007.

"We have refused to part with our paddy fields. We have been fighting against the stadium project for almost half a decade now. The government had given up on the project, but suddenly from out of blue, the project is being reactivated," Malwankar said.

The farmers were offered a compensation of Rs five per sq metre. But it was rejected recently, when they were called by district administration to sign a document. Total 1.30 lakh sq mts of land is proposed to be acquired for this project.

"We are forced to keep our fields barren because there is no water. We used to cultivate them annually till few years back when there was no proper rain. We are now waiting for Tillari irrigation project to irrigate our fields," Malwankar said.

"The issue is not just of paddy field. There is a huge forest area with rich flora and fauna in it. More than 5000 trees are going to be cut for this project," Savio D'Souza, a local activist, said.

"Of the total land, 43,000 sq mts is forest, 25,000 sq mts is paddy fields and 60,000 sq mts is orchard," he said, showing the map, which he had brought during the presentation by GBA.

GBA Convenor Sabina Martins said since the proposed stadium falls in eco-sensitive zone, the state government should conduct impact assessment study before going ahead with the project.

"This issue will be discussed with the chief minister when we will meet him on April 15," she added.

Narvekar is trying to make the stadium as a prestige issue by erecting it in Thivim, his constituency and that too in the paddy fields and by cutting trees.

Shame on you Narvekar.

Goa doesn't need a mega cricket stadium by destroying the natural habitat.

It is a tragedy that we have stooped so low as to destroy the fertile land and use it for erecting cricket stadium which will never feed the millions of hungry mouths! Instead it would be a source for wasting useful time of thousands, who are habituated of looking at cricket/listening commentary during working hours and continue to draw salary from public exchequer!

What right does the Govt have to acquire land at throw away prices and offer compensation of peanuts, and that too for cricket stadium?

Even the Britishers or Portuguese would not have resorted to such barbaric and unjust methods of oppression on a common man!

Now the evil eyes have landed on the dormant village of Tivim. New ways and new methods are implemented by the crooks and thieves of Goa (Politicians) to loot and plunder. My dear people of Tivim, if they give you water to grow paddy, how will they earn in crores (loot)? They do not eat rice nowadays. They eat pizzas and other expensive food sans rice. If they build a stadium, the personal treasuries of the Ministers will be filled up. Hence the loss of the Tivim People is the gain of the concerned politicians. Shortly, slowly but surely, they have decided to sell off Goa to the outsiders and throw the Goans out of Goa and it was with this in mind Goa was liberated. People of Tivim, do not allow these idiots to touch even one inch of you fields. Let them build the stadium inside the bungalows or in their properties. Stand up to them and give a good fight. – Menino (Valpoi)
