Politics needs a re-boot
I do not know why the Congress feels that the anti-corruption movement is anti-Congress. The leaders are falling prey to the perception that the Congress is another word for corruption as the BJP is to communalism. Though largely true, both are not the sole tenants of either corruption or communalism respectively. There are also allies of different shades.READ
Goa & Goans: No integration deficit
Why are Goans labelled as less integrated with the nation? Why at every given opportunity, we are told that some Goans still look at the erstwhile rulers? Will those some Goans be always branded as less Indian because of imbibed traits of Portuguese lifestyle, food style and dress style? What exactly is Indian culture and national mainstream? Is Goan culture not a part of Indian culture like that of Kerala, Maharashtra, Punjab or Gujarat? Is it not because of the culture and lifestyle of Goans that Goa is a jewel of India? Has not Goa given the opportunity to ...READ
Small States, Better Governance
Small is beautiful but small is also politics. Small states are vulnerable to be taken over by closed groups or lobbies. This can defeat the purpose of establishing small states and the benefits associated with it mainly for the neglected regions and people. READ
Preserving Goa sans special status
If the government is committed to arrest alienation of lands and skewed demography, it is possible to a large extent even within the present framework. There is no need to wait for the luxury of the special status through a constitutional amendment.READ
Land Acquisition: Fair, Just & Equitable
Forcible acquisition cannot be the answer. We have to find that acquisition for public purpose also satisfies the private and personal purpose of the owners and dispossessed. This should also form the part of the public purpose of the government.READ
Higher Judiciary: Movers & Shakers
Judges and judiciary playing to the gallery by ridiculing the elected representatives and the executive at every opportunity would make better sense if they also put up a system and mechanism to pull up the Lordships for criminal delay, accumulated arrears of litigation like unattended municipal solid waste at dumping sites and corruption in the judiciary almost on par with what prevails in all-India services. READ
Higher Education: Too much demand; too little supply
More students are denied opportunities of higher learning as compared to the number securing admissions. Despite checks and controls, the paucity of seats has opened a rampant black market in professional courses particularly in medicine. Students with reasonably high scores are forced to tap overseas options for higher education making learning costly and prohibitive.READ
Humanising Police Bureaucracy
The end objective is to humanize the public-police interaction. The starting point is to make police sensitive to police first. READ
Freedom to Choose, much to lose
I am not worried about the future of Goa and Goa’s identity. It is already put on slow fire. I am also not worried about the future of Konkani. My worry is the future of the children. READ
RTI & Office of Governor
Governors would be respected if they voluntarily toe the spirit of enactments such as the RTI. They should direct their officers to provide the information called for by citizens unless it is specifically exempted under the enactment. Filing appeals before the higher judiciary to establish immunity is akin to buying time. I would say that the time is ripe even to have a re-look at the privileges and immunities bestowed on Governors at the commencement of the Constitution. READ
